The Family Ski Trip

Mon, 5 May 2014

So, why do we do it (ski)?

Because, like generations of skiers before us, we will eventually push-off, leaving behind not just all that schlepping, but the weight of Newton's laws as well. Gravity becomes our friend. The sullen teenager lights up, the 8-year-old stops whining, and your spouse is no longer a parent, but a fellow skier. We will each take our own route, but we will go down the hill together. - David Carr

Your kids are bundled beyond recognition and begin with the slope for budding skiers; so horizontal, if it wasn't for the burst of pride watching them bambi to the bottom and look back with a 'look what I did' toothless grin - you could probably nip for a coffee before the descent came to an end. Whilst they get to grips with the leap from sledding to skiing you can't help but wonder how they will look when they reach snow maturity and advance to the biggest of slopes serviced by the chair lift and together you conquer the mountains!

Whether you're introducing your child to skiing or you're teenager is a blur of Burton snow wear in the distance - there are many things to consider before hitting the slopes.

So what is the Winter 101?

Rockies Snow Wear Specialists Recommendations:

The goal is to be warm when riding up the chairlift, but not sweaty while skiing down.

- You need an insulated, waterproof, but breathable jacket. Look for the necessary features like waterproof and breathability rating, vent zips and snow skirt.

- The pants should have most of the features the jacket provides but also feature interior ankle gaiters that keep snow from getting in to the ski boots. Look out for the jacket and pants which attach together or a bib-style pant for the younger children. We understand parents are some times reluctant to purchase new snow wear for each Winter Season so Rockies carry labels which provide the 'room to grow' advancements; giving your ever growing youngsters a little more time in their favourite Roxy bib pant or Quiksilver Ski pants.

- Thermals are a must! We stock a selection of temperature-regulating Merino options to wear under their snow wear, labels such as Icebreaker and Linzi Merino.

- A snow boot which is higher than the ankle to prevent snow getting inside, water resistant materials and an excellent temperature rating. You don't want them to have cold toes when crunching through the snow.

- Goggles will help protect your child from the elements - We recommend buying the goggles and helmet together so they are a perfect fit. Our favourite labels are Smith and Red.

- Gloves, Mittens, Socks, Beanies and Neck warmers are much needed additions to ensure your kid stays warm during your family ski trip.
