How to Make Travel with Kids Bearable

Wed, 4 December 2019

Whether it is flights or road trips you have coming up over the Christmas period here is our list of top tips to help make it all a bit more bearable.

Firstly don’t be hard on yourselves travelling with kids is definitely a time for breaking all the rules so that you arrive at your destination not completely dishevelled. Say yes to screen time and let nap and feeding schedules take their own course etc.  This coming from someone that had a horrific long haul flight with a 15-month-old last year.  We think you just have to accept that things will go wrong! So these are some of the things I wish I had known before taking the doomed flight:

Wrap up some activity-based presents up for them to open in transit.  The opening and discovery of something new will surely take up a good chunk of time! At Rockies we have a selection of activity packs to keep kids of all ages entertained.  Our favourites are from Tiger Tribe - activity packs, stickers and colouring which will keep you and them happy. We love the How to Draw on the Farm set suitable for ages 5+ and teaches kids how to draw a tractor or sketch a galloping horse! There's heaps of cool inspiration under the Play section on our website.

Post-its remarkably offer fascination whether they're in their car seat or on a plane.  The art of sticking a whole pack wherever they want takes up a good window of time.

Snacks – snacking is a great way to kill time so opt for the snacks that will keep them occupied for longer times (ie. a raisin packet takes a good minute to open before they individually have to pick them out.

Babies seem to poo at altitude so remember ziplock bags so you can worry about all of the mess on arrival.

Comfy clothes for long days in the car or plane. It's always colder on a plane so remember a layer of merino wool if you can. Little Flock of Horrors offers perfect travelling clothes in our opinion! And keep sunscreen and sunhats close by for pit stops if you're travelling by car.

Also some airlines allow you to put a black cover over the bassinet.  The one we like best is from Cozigo - a real game changer as planes are so noisy and light. Getting a window seat is a must on a plane with kids and meeting the pilot is an added bonus for the older kids too!

If your destination is in a different timezone our advice is to revert to your routine in the new time zone as soon as you land (or even better as you're flying).

Hope there are some things in here that help.  Happy holidays from Rockies x
