Things to do in Queenstown with Kids

Tue, 2 July 2019

It’s a question we get asked A LOT – what are the best things to do in Queenstown with kids? So we thought we’d put together a list of all the insider local knowledge we have.  This list can be used in summer or winter months so there is something for everyone. If you’re heading to Queenstown these school holidays or live locally be sure to come and visit us in-store either in town or at Remarkables Park.  We’d love to see you!

  • The Remarkables vet in Arrowtown has animals you can feed. All you need is a gold coin donation to buy food for some very friendly and cheeky goats, sheep, deer, geese and chickens.  Lots of great cafes nearby to tap a coffee and fluffy mission on too. There is also a great animal farm in Glenorchy.
  • There are tonnes of great playgrounds in the Queenstown area but our favourites are the lakefront playground by the Bathhouse and Hanley’s Farm out towards Jack's Point – something for kids of all ages at both of these!
  • Zoological gardens at Frankton, situated on a public reserve at the end of Riverside Rd, is home to wildlife including ponies, ducks, peacocks and rabbits.
  • We are obviously big fans of the kids options at all the local ski fields but Coronet Peak's caters to the whole family.  From school holiday programs to packages for the whole family there is something for everyone.  We also love the proximity of this mountain to central Queenstown - hit the slopes in 20 minutes!
  • The family annual pass for the Skyline gondola is great value if you go regularly (it's cost benefit kicks in on your second visit!). You also get a free child pass when an adult pass is purchased so makes a lot of sense.  You have access to the luge once you're up the top which is one of Queenstown's best family activities.
  • Feeding ducks in the gardens and climbing willows on the Frankton waterfront is lots of fun.
  • There is an amazing 50% off at some of Queenstown's best restaurants on First Table – perfect for families wanting to dine between 5-6pm.
  • We are big advocates for putting on layers and getting outside no matter what the weather but if it is torrential and the ski fields are shut there are great libraries, indoor trampolining and a Chipmunks in the area.
  • Pick up a copy of the Kidz Go magazine for all the latest info and events – we always have editions in store if you want to swing by and pick up a copy.
  • And last but not least head into Rockies for all your clothing and accessories needs - we have you covered from newborn to 16 years and we find that some of our customers like to place an order ahead of time at www.rockies.co.nz and pick up once they arrive in Queenstown! Plus we also hire out a toboggan, pram and backpack if you don't fancy carrying all of that to Queenstown.

Happy holidays from all of us at Rockies x
